TITLE: The Argument-based Approach to Validation (60 min.) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe the general history of validity in testing. 2. Define the argument approach to validity. 3. Explain different types of validity evidence. ABSTRACT: In his intermediate-level lecture, Dr. Michael Kane will discuss how explicit recognition of the inferences and assumptions underlying the interpretation and use of test scores can guide the process of validation by identifying which kinds of evidence are needed to evaluate the claims being made. BIOGRAPHY: Michael T. Kane is the Samuel J. Messick Chair in Test Validity at Educational Testing Service, the first person to have received this honor. He is most renowned for his works in validity theory and practice and has written many articles and chapters on the subject, including the chapter "Validation" in the fourth edition of Educational Measurement. He is also acclaimed for his work on generalizability theory, licensure and certification testing and standard setting. Dr. Kane has had a long and distinguished career teaching at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the State University of New York at Stony Brook; the University of Iowa; and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has served as Director of Research at the National Conference of Bar Examiners, as Vice President for Research and Development and Senior Research Scientist at American College Testing (ACT) in Iowa City, and as Director of Test Development at the National League for Nursing. Dr. Kane received his Ph.D. in education from Stanford University.
