Ethical Issues In Clinical Assessment (60 min.)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. List the standards from the American Psychological Association Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that apply to clinical assessment
2. Identify deviations from standard of care for psychological assessment that can be found in the ethics code including confidentiality, competence, and informed consent
ABSTRACT: This is an intermediate-level presentation. A variety of ethical issues arise in the process of clinical assessment. Several ethical issues common to clinical practice will be identified through brief scenarios. The American Psychological Association Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct will be applied to aid in their resolution.
BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Elizabeth V. Swenson is Professor Emerita of Psychology at John Carroll University. She obtained her PhD from Case Western Reserve University and her JD from Cleveland State University. Her teaching interests include professional ethics and psychology and law. Recent publications on professional ethics include a chapter in the APA Handbook of Testing and Assessment (2013) titled Legal Issues in Clinical and Counseling Testing and Assessment and a journal article, Translating Ethical Dilemmas from Traditional to the Online Classroom (2012). Dr. Swenson is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Midwestern Psychological Association, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She has served two 3-year terms on the APA Ethics Committee and was a member of the APA Ethics Code Revision Taskforce.
