Considerations for Suicide Risk Assessment With Youth of Color (87 minutes) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe recent trends of suicidal ideation and behaviors for youth of color. 2. Identify culturally relevant risk and protective factors in the assessment of suicide risk. 3. Discuss current evidence on suicide risk assessment measures and reporting patterns for youth of color. ABSTRACT: Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth. Recent data suggest that suicidal ideation and behaviors are increasing among youth of color. This intermediate-level webinar will present these recent trends and culturally relevant risk and protective factors in the assessment of suicide risk for youth of color. Additionally, a brief review of suicide risk assessment measures with corresponding evidence for youth of color and recommendations will be provided. BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Rhonda C. Boyd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Additionally, she is a researcher at CHOP PolicyLab. She is the Associate Director of the CHOP’s Child and Adolescent Mood Program in the outpatient clinic where she practices as a licensed psychologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of youth with depression and suicide risk. She has served as a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple federal grants including those from the National Institutes of Health and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Overall, she has clinical and research expertise in maternal depression, Black youth and families, prevention interventions, adolescent depression, and youth suicide risk. In addition, she participated in the workgroup for the Congressional Black Caucus Emergency Taskforce on Black Youth Suicide & Mental Health.
